Mass Spectra of Some Organa-Lead and Organa-Mercury Compounds

:\<Iass spectra of letramethyl and tetraethyl lead and of dimethyl, diet llyl, and di-n-butyl mercury were obtained with a Co nsolidated 21102 mass spec trometer. Monoisotopic spectra were calculated by using the isotopic abundance derived from eac h spectrum. A variation in the lead isotope abundance was observed in the commercially available lead a lkyls. No variation was observed a mong t he mercury a lkyls and good agreement was obtained with previously published measurements on mercury vapor . There was no indication of voltage discrimination. The mass spectra of the lead a lkyls are qualitatively similar. The principal por t ion of t he total ionization is contri buted by t he dissociation of one and t hree alkyl groups. I ons resul ting from t he dissociation of one 01' more hydrogen atoms are small, as are t he hydrocarbon ions. H y drides and hydrocarbon ions resul t ing from intramolecula r rearrangement were observed. The principal par t of total ionizat ion in the mercury a lkyl spectra was contribu ted by hydrocarbon ions. Hydrides and other rearrange ment peaks were observed. A preliminary experi ment on a leaded gasoli ne, ll s ing a model 21103 spectrometer, indicated t hat sensit ivity is sufficien t to analyze for a few hundredths of a mole percent of t e traethy l lead wit h a precision of abou t 2 percenL of t he value.
